Interactive Realities: A Tutorial on Multi-Modal, Collaborative Virtual Reality
نویسنده
چکیده
In the field of virtual reality, there is much attention to the notion of multi-modal environments. These environments use various senses of the human body to achieve an overall immersion in the environment leading to an increased sense of presence. In addition, there is much work in collaborative architectures allowing users to interact with each other and the world itself. This tutorial introduces the topic of software infrastructures for collaborative, multi-modal environments and then surveys the work and progress in this area. Within multi-modal environments, most applications have covered both the visual and auditory senses. However, it has only been in recent years that research has progressed in the haptic and olfactory areas. A software infrastructure for multi-modal environments should address all the senses, and research testbeds fulfilling this requirement are beginning to appear. Adding collaboration within the environment requires addressing aspects of its own. All these multi-modal and collaborative issues are discussed and existing research testbeds are surveyed. By putting multi-modal environments together with collaborative environments, the goal of an immersive, presence-grabbing environment will be met.

Shared Simple Virtual Environment: An Object-Oriented Framework for Highly Interactive Group Collaboration
Shared Simple Virtual Environment (SSVE) is an object-oriented software framework designed for object-focused small group collaboration in highly dynamic virtual environments. Compared to most other collaborative virtual environment systems, SSVE allows a team of six to eight people to collaborate closely on a highly interactive model construction task. SSVE is a “multimulti” framework—multi-us...
متن کاملThe Shared Imagination: Creative Collaboration in Augmented Virtuality
In creative collaboration, the primary focus of participants is creating “what if” scenarios that must be jointly imagined. Collaboration in strictly Physical Reality (PR) is constrained because of the limitations the real world places on shared imagination. As dynamic as Virtual Reality (VR) environments can be, subtle human-to-human interaction is severely limited in these totally synthetic e...

متن کاملAGENT: Awareness Game Environment for Natural Training
We propose AGENT, the Awareness Game Environment for Natural Training, as a virtual environment in which serious games can be enacted. AGENT combines research on interactive storytelling, game design, turn-taking and social signal processing with a multi-modal UI in a modular fashion. Current work in progress will deliver a first demonstrable prototype within 2013.
متن کاملSurvey on Collaborative AR for Multi-user in Urban Simulation
This paper describes an augmented reality (AR) environment that allows multiple participants or multi-user to interact with 2D and 3D data. AR simply can provide a collaborative interactive AR environment for urban simulation, where users can interact naturally and intuitively. In addition, the collaborative AR makes multi-user in urban simulation to share simultaneously a real world and virtua...
